The Role of Water Softeners

A water softener system removes magnesium and calcium from your water through a process called ion exchange. When hard water gets into the mineral tank, it flows through resin beads charged with the sodium ion. These beads have a negative charge, making them anions, while the calcium and magnesium minerals present in hard water have a positive charge, meaning they’re cations. As opposite charges attract, the minerals’ negative charge attracts the resin beads’ positive charge. While the water flows through the resin, the beads collect all the mineral ions and remove them from the water and release the sodium ion. As a result, the resin strips all the mineral content out of the water, allowing softened water to flow into your home.
